Horror authors across Northern California (including myself) have come together to release Tales for the Camp Fire, a new anthology of short stories, to support wildfire relief efforts. All profits from the sale of the anthology will be donated to wildfire relief funds administered by the North Valley Community Foundation.

On the morning of November 8th, 2018, the worst wildfire in the state’s history erupted in the foothills of Northern California. While emergency efforts were immediate, the Camp Fire burned for seventeen days before it was finally contained. It destroyed the town of Paradise and burned over 150,000 acres. At least 85 people died in the blaze. The impact of the fire was felt across the entire region the as air quality became the worst in the world.

When our local Horror Writer's chapter got together, the question of “what can we do?” was raised. “We’re writers,” said San Leandro resident and author Ben Monroe,“how can we can help with our stories?” Soon we formed a plan to produce a charity anthology, contacting horror authors across the region to ask them to donate stories. Some wrote new pieces for the book, while others submitted favorite reprints for inclusion. In the end, the anthology topped out with 24 great stories totaling over 300 pages.

Tales for the Camp Fire, is edited by Loren Rhoads and is being published by E.M. Markoff’s Tomes & Coffee Press. It will be available in early May in both paperback and ebook formats.

For any Bay Area locals, we will be presenting the book at the Bay Area Book Festival May 4th and 5th, and will be at Books on B Street Saturday May 11th signing copies and talking about the fire.

The book will be available through Amazon. Members of the publishing team are attending the Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley on May 4 & 5, and will have copies of the book available for sale there. All profits from the book are going to be donated to the North Valley Community Foundation efforts to support the on going wildfire relief efforts.Anthony DeRouenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11266281243319941379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4313413207884301250.post-9310694290074524272019-04-22T08:53:00.002-07:002019-04-22T08:53:52.090-07:00HororNews.net sponsoring DPFF!

The Towne 3 Cinemas, nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley, will play host to a list of veteran and up-and-coming local and international horror filmmakers, eager to share their grisly works of art with a fresh and frothing audience. The festival seeks to spotlight innovative storytelling with an eye on traditional means produced in high-quality fashion.

Included in the first announcement is The Quiet Room Bears, written and directed by Lee Howard, the film offers us a glimpse into a sinister landscape packed with horribly disfigured teddy bears and a gruesome, matriarchal entity that racks up the body count. In the film Water Horse, done by veteran filmmaker couple Sarah Wisner and Sean Temple, the short weaves a chilling, fever dream tale involving the sudden appearance of an abandoned boat which turns the last day of summer into a mother’s nightmare. Filmmakers from both The Quiet Room Bears and Water Horse will be in attendance to present their respective films and participate in a Q&A sessions afterwards.

Also playing at DPFF’s inaugural run, and making its Silicon Valley premiere is the wildly fun short Atomic Ed, written by Cyril Delouche and Directed by Nicolas Hugon, and starring Oscar Lesage as Ed, a young man who rises up to defend his friends against a humanoid monster.

Great news! The Last Showing was selected to screen at the Halloween Horror Picture Show in Tampa, Florida. This is a wonderfully horrific festival I targeted nearly a year ago, and I'm excited it's going to be shown.

So far the communication with the organizers have been great. It appears The Last Showing will screen on day 3. I sent a small media kit today with an updated poster. Although I'm not able to attend the fest I'll definitely be there in spirit.

Big news! This has been in the works for a bit, and I can finally begin sharing it.

On October 4th and 5th, 2019 - Towne 3 Cinemas in San Jose, California, in association with Alone in the Dark Films, will be hosting the first annual Death's Parade Film Fest. This marks a rare opportunity for Bay Area folk to attend a horror-centric film festival in their own backyard, without having to travel ungodly amounts miles to experience one. You can reach the portal for the festival here.

Ever since I attend the Sacramento Horror Film Festival I've looked into the possibility of hosting one in the Bay Area. The good folks at Towne 3 Cinemas were just as enthused as I was, so we have come together to hold a two-day event showcasing numerous types of horror films both short and feature length from around the globe.

Over the course of the next few months I will be seeking out local Bay Area filmmakers to offer them the opportunity to get involved. As a filmmaker myself, I understand the daunting challenge of getting your work into a festival that can receive hundreds of submissions.

Sellers of creepy, horror merchandise will also be sought out. Towne 3 Cinemas is a good-sized venue with ample space to include at least three merchants inside and outside the doors.

Ticket sales and film submissions will open soon. See you there!Anthony DeRouenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11266281243319941379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4313413207884301250.post-1912349873696822452018-06-20T15:29:00.001-07:002018-07-26T12:42:44.052-07:00Press Coverage from Reel Nightmare Films

The Independent Critic reviewed The Last Showing. You can read the full review here.

Some excerpts from the review:

"The Last Showing works because it's clear that DeRouen knows exactly what he's going for here and has assembled a cast and crew quite capable of pulling it off."
"Max Troia is an absolute gem here as Steven, kicking off the film with those dreadful vibes that just make you know he's in store for something and it's probably not going to be good."
"The Last Showing is yet another reminder that a talented cast and crew can do wonders even working on a low budget."

Indeed the budget was low, but the effort, care, and attention to detail was phenomenal. Recently through my membership with the Horror Writer's Association I'm beginning a mentorship with Danielle Kaheaku, who has published several short stories, four anthologies, five novels and three produced screenplays. I absolutely can't wait to share the feature-length story with everyone!

Who attended the Berkeley Book Festival this past weekend? If you did, you left with a bag of books. if you didn't you missed out! This year had another great crowd and plenty of interested writers in what our group does. Among the plethora of books for sale were my finished short films He Takes and Returns and The Last Showing. I made some sales, exchanged business cards with a few involved with producing and generally loved how kids ran up the table wishing to pick up a movie only to be told no by a "concerned" parent.

The festival was sprawling! Streets were lined with vendors and independent artists, and children had plenty of areas to go crazy. Half Price Books gave away books all weekend, a wonderful gesture many took advantage of (including myself!). Crows packed the San Francisco Chronicle pavilion to hear local artists discuss wide ranging topics.

Our table was overflowing with horror! Matthew Brockmeyer and LS Johnson joined our ragtag bunch which included EM Markoff, Loren Rhoads (and her amazing 199 Cemeteries to Visit Before You Die), Luke Neher, Jeff Seaman, Crystal Romero and Amber. For this year I decided to add music to create an atmosphere and keep the energy pumping, the table was delicately arranged, and we had plenty of faces to greet customers. If you missed us this year we'll definitely be back.
For me - it was a relief to finally have my short films out, and the reception was splendid.

Great news! I've reached an agreement with Reel Nightmare Films to distribute both He Takes and Returns and The Last Showing to stream on Amazon OnDemand and Vimeo OnDemand. This was a major goal of the festival circuit, and it has been achieved. I couldn't be more excited to partner with Armand and Art at Reel Nightmare to share these projects with horror fans.

What about the horror festivals? I still have submissions pending, and while I'd love to see the projects beam to anxiously waiting audiences I'm just as ecstatic about having the films available to stream in homes across the country.

The blu-ray copies will act as double features, with both films and the special content packed in. There will still be two variations, if you want the The Last Showing or He Takes and Returns covers. Reel Nightmare films will also distribute the blu-rays through other yet to be determined platforms.

I'll be updating the homepage with links on where to rent and/or purchase the films as they release.

It's become an annual tradition for my Mom and I to attend SVCC - now the biggest convention north of San Diego Comic Con in California. For three years now we've seen the convention improve and adjust things, while also remove some things which were nice ( what happened to the video game lounge this year?!)

While the variety of celebrity guest panels and workshops remains the convention's glaring weakness, this year featured a couple new faces, Katee Sackoff, of "BattleStar Gallactica" fame, and powerhouse Dean Devlin. The producer behind Independence Day, Stargate and The Patriot was on hand to promote his newest movie The Bad Samaritan, and his partnership with a fan-owned movie studio called Legion M.

Dean was joined by the founders of Legion M to discuss what their bold strategy for empowering fans of cinema to support movies they want to see, funded by their pocketbooks with scouting reports provided by Legion M members. So far they have 7,000 investors with another round coming soon.

For myself, the idea of submitting my script The Last Showing or The Cemetery Across the Street is daunting, to say the least. Once I returned home from SVCC I promptly registered to become a Legion M member, and will become an investor when the next round opens. Why? The opportunity to be a part of something outside the Hollywood norms. This doesn't mean Legion M will suddenly take interest in my work, but it's a door that may lead to other doors, and if nothing else, I can participate in a very fresh and intriguing movement.

Your can read the article here.
A quick update on the films. The blu-rays will be produced next week ahead of the Berkeley Book Festival on April 28th. If you're in the Bay Area pick up a copy! They'll be going for $5 each. I'll have two variant covers, and each film will have different special features.Anthony DeRouenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11266281243319941379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4313413207884301250.post-83075299705923701532018-01-31T09:03:00.000-08:002018-01-31T09:03:52.653-08:00Both films finished!

Private online screeners have been sent to the cast and crew of both films. Festival submissions are underway! I will post updates regarding the festivals as I hear back.

So what's next? A small much needed break, followed by the blu-ray design, editing the commentary videos and preparing for the Berkeley Book Festival setup that will showcase both posters and have physical copies of the films on hand for sale.

I have agreed to allow Reel Nightmare Films to distribute both films through Amazon OnDemand and Vimeo On Demand. Based on what happens with ScreamFestLA the release will either be September or October.Anthony DeRouenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11266281243319941379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4313413207884301250.post-4615522867216605752018-01-12T10:20:00.000-08:002018-01-12T15:07:42.796-08:00He Takes and Returns teaser!Have a watch!

The poster is complete! Large prints will be available soon. It prominently features one of Chrissy's childhood dolls which the demon Coactore takes a fancy too, and leaves his sinister mark.

While the poster for The Last Showing is a crazy collage of sights, He Takes and Returns exhibits a different vibe. The doll becomes the center of the family's confusion and rising apprehension while raising concerns their daughter continues to experience trauma related to a burglary that family endured the past year.

Regarding the film - post-production is coming along splendidly. Editing and color grading is finished. Michelangelo Rodriguez is composing the score. Michael Packmore is mixing the audio. Although this was the second film shot last year it may serve to be the first one submitted to the festivals. The Last Showing was a far more complex shoot and will require more post-production time to finish.

The illustration was done by wonderfully talented Forest Kell. Of the many illustrators who responded to my commission request his works stood way out. When I looked at his work I found a random beauty that meshed so well together.

If you've seen one horror movie poster you've pretty much seen them all. I challenged myself to come up with something different that could easily stand out in a crowded submission process, and would turn heads in a theater hallway.

Update on the film itself - Luigi Janssen is doing the score while Michael Packmore is working on the sound mix. My target time frame of mid-January to make the early horror film festival submission deadlines still looks good!
I'm fortunate to be working again with the talented Joseph Camilleri (Blood Relative) - this time along with Nadia Lykov (Blood Relative), Germaine Gaudet (Blood Relative), Jeanne Young (Sins of the Past, Jolted 2) and Michael Gwynn who will play Coactore, a demon who takes people and leaves behind possessions which act as conduits for his return. Shooting takes place October 7th and 8th.

In the same vein of The Last Showing, He Takes and Returns is a glimpse into a larger story, but provides a satisfying ending nonetheless. Both films unveil the entities' horrific personas and how the larger story arc could possibly unfold.
The short is based on a feature length screenplay of the same name. The short film focuses on the primary characters of the feature, but with a different ending.

Starring Lara Jean Mummert (2Jennifer, Anomaly) as Mary, Max Troia (Brawl is War) as Steven and Joseph Camilleri (Blood Relative) as Michael.
The Last Showing started as a pitch idea for the Horror Writer's Convention in Long Beach. Upon hearing the news the pitch session was no longer happening I began to research what it would take to produce the film. The first step was finding a location. Of the three theaters that responded Towne 3 Cinema in San Jose fit the mold of a "2nd run" theater as needed for the film. Not only did it fit the mold the theater featured enough creepy locations I extended the second half of the film to feature them!

Principal photography took place between August 14 - 16th, plus an additional day of shooting on the 25th. The Last Showing will be available for streaming end of April / early May followed by the blu-ray.
Throughout the past few months I've been adding more and more to a story I felt was already substantial. So if all goes well, and there are no glaring changes that need to be made then Precipice will see the light of day very soon. I know, I've said that before, but now I mean it! You get one chance to make a first impression.
